When I think about things from Barbara Bush's POV...

It does seem sort of great to be poor.

A Few Reasons Why It's Great to be Poor:

1.) You are made of stone and impervious to pain or fear, so something that would be psychologically and physically traumatic to a regular human being doesn't bother you at all.

2.) You've grown zero attachment to the locality you were reared in, neighbors you grew up with, and culture of your city, so in a way it's actually kinda cool to also lose your home and few personal belongings (photos, letters, cars, grandparents, etc)--which are basically worthless anyhow--and head for Texas, aka, Dreamtown USA.

3.) When you're poor, the following quote has a pleasant ring to it: "We advise people that this city has been destroyed. It has been completely destroyed."
