Looking back to the Insanely Long Fanbase Email
All the way back on March 28th, I did my preview of the season.
I didn't break down the teams and stats because there are far better qualified people than me to do that.
Instead I tried to figure out what a World Series title would mean to each fan base... how hungry they were for it... what veterans without a World Series Ring were on the team... and basically try to take the pulse as best as I can about the fan bases.
Well let's take a quick peak of what I said about both pennant winners:
PHILLIES:
Philadelphia has replaced Boston as the sports city near New York that is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It's not just that they've lost title chances. They've blown titles with great stars on their team. This city needs a sports pick me up and one bigger than a Mark Wahlberg Eagles movie. This is Philly... if one of their teams doesn't win soon, someone might get whacked.
RAYS:
Can you believe it has been 10 years since the Devil Rays were vomitted onto the field and they have yet to win 71 games in a season. Who knows what their fan base is like or if they actually have one?
In terms of the category of "who will be let off the hook?":
PHILLIES:
Mitch Williams.
Also every other Philly star since 1983 including Barkley, Iverson, Lindros and McNabb.
RAYS:
Whoever thought it was a good idea to put a team in Tampa Bay
So either a passionate sports city will sigh in relief or a mind bogglingly young team will have a chance to build a fan base from the calls of contraction.
