You aren't dreaming, Bruins fans

I wonder how many Bruins fans wondered if it was all just a dream.

I know after the Red Sox beat the Yankees in 2004, I woke up the next morning and thought "Wait, that HAPPENED, right?" And had to read about 59 newspapers and kept slapping myself to confirm it.

(By the time the World Series was over, I was just numb.)

So I can imagine that Bruins fans are stumbling around this morning thinking "Did the Bruins REALLY just win the Stanley Cup?"

Well, if you are saying that and NOT running naked to the S.A.T.s on the backs of dolphins, then you are NOT dreaming.

Now, I can not claim to be a Bruins fan. I am a casual hockey team and MY team is the San Jose Sharks (as I mentioned a few times) so I can not participate in the celebration.

But many of my friends are lifelong Bruins fans and are loving it today.

Friends like Adam Wade, the terrific comedian and storyteller (originally from New Hampshire) who loves and bleeds all Boston sports. He live tweeted the game last night.

The great Nick Stevens, creator of the character Paul Fitzy Fitzgerald and writer of Townie News, who has been telling Vancouver fans to Go Canuck Themselves.

Horror master and Inglorious Basterd Eli Roth who wrote on his Twitter feed "I am actually crying like a cougar watching the Sex and the City movie. This is amazing. Congratulations #Bruins!!"

But most of all, my best pal Ritch Duncan... werewolf author and great comic mind and without a doubt the biggest Bruins fan I know.

During our bachelors years, we'd hang out in my apartment eating Chinese food while watching Return of the Jedi (we were available, ladies!)

Usually during one of the Ewok scenes, Ritchie would sigh and say "I'm never going to see the Bruins win the Stanley Cup, am I?"

I'd shrug and say "I'm never going to see the Red Sox win the World Series, am I?"

We'd scarf down some sesame chicken. Ritchie would add "We're never going to meet our wives, are we?"

Well now we are both married to beautiful women, are parents and we've seen our teams win.

What else do we have to do?

So for all the Bruins fans out there, especially the one I watched movies with in my apartment, I hope you celebrate like Ewoks!

Go Bruins... for Ritch Duncan's sake!

This year I am more excited about the Stanley Cup Final than any year since 1994 when I was living in New York and the Rangers were on the verge of ending their curse.

The only common thing is Vancouver being in it.

The Boston Bruins are in it... and being a native New Englander I know my share of Bruins fans. But nobody I know has the passion of my great friend, frequent collaborator and the man who would hang out in my apartment more often than anyone I know, Mr. Ritch Duncan.

Ritch is a very talented writer for TruTV. Check out his wonderful take on Eddie Vedder's ukulele album.

Ritch is a comedian and writer in New York and we performed in more shows than I can remember, worked together on the radio, he had a role in my movie and we spoke at each others weddings.

Along with Bob Powers, he wrote the hilarious "Werewolf's Guide To Life: A Manual for the Newly Bitten."

And he is as big a Bruins fan as I am a Red Sox fan.
I was at his apartment to watch the Red Sox beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.
He saw ME at the zenith of baseball happiness (let's face it Sox fans, we remember the Yankee win MUCH more than we remember the win in St. Louis!)

Ritchie deserves that moment too.

Go Bruins!

Once again, hockey shows Instant Replay works

Did you see the end of the hockey game tonight? It was a great game and it had a peculiar but eye opening ending…

The Flyers sent it into overtime with a late goal in the third period. Philadelphia was going bananas. But then Patrick Kane shot one past Flyer Goalie Michael Leighton… and only one person on the planet Earth saw it was a Stanley Cup winning goal: Kane.

It wasn’t clear to the announcers, the refs nor the Flyers. Kane went down the ice yelling like a madman and his Blackhawk teammates followed suit. But nobody was 100% sure.

Then the replay showed clearly it was a goal. The refs checked it and confirmed it. There was no doubt. The Chicago Blackhawks had won their first Stanley Cup since 1961.

Contrast that with 1999 Final game. Buffalo scrambling to stay alive at home and force a 7th game. They went into 3 Overtimes and each team left their hearts and guts on the ice. Then Brett Hull crossed the crease and scored off of Domiik Hasek. There was no video review right away and the Stars celebrated the Cup victory, Buffalo was enraged and to this day there is a lack of satisfaction regarding one of the best hockey games you and I will ever see.

And why? Because we all saw one thing and yet the officials on the ice ruled differently from reality.

Taking the time to review Kane’s goal last night will be long forgotten. What will be remembered is it won the Cup and there isn’t a Philadelphia fan who can disagree with that.

And afterwards, one of the best traditions in sport unfolded… the presentation of the Stanley Cup.

You see folks! You can HAVE replay and also have your traditions.

One doesn’t destroy the other.

Chew on that and congrats to the Blackhawks. (It takes the sting out of them eliminating my Sharks.)

I guess the "Human Element" isn't so important in hockey

Did you see what happened in the Stanley Cup Final game last night?

In the overtime period in Philadelphia, Simon Gagne of the Flyers slapped a shot that looked like it was a game winner.

Everyone was celebrating and no doubt some dude threw up on a little girl.

But what did the officials do? They checked the tape! They made sure it was right!
They weren't going to award a Stanley Cup Final victory to a team based on the human element.

They found out it WASN'T a goal and play resumed.

Now the Flyers won it later and made it a moot point, but just think about that for a second. Without instant replay a team could have won a Stanley Cup Final game they didn't deserve. The difference between a 2-1 hole and a 3-0 hole in a best of seven series is enormous. (Don't tell the Bruins that.)

The call was right. There is no "But the Flyers didn't REALLY win it" caveat.

Remind me why we can't have that kind of certainty again? Not just because of Jim Joyce's epic bed wetting last night, but also last seasons' grotesquely umpired post season.

Heck the Tigers could have made the playoffs with the right call!

Nah.... the HUMAN element is more important.

Riiiiiight.

Who should I root for in the Stanley Cup Finals?

I admit I am a casual hockey fan. When I was a single man, I followed hockey much more closely, but I adhere to the theory that when you become a married man with kids you have to make a choice:

1. Follow every sport casually.

2. Follow one sport REALLY closely and check in on the other ones from time to time.

Obviously not only did I pick #2 but I also picked baseball as my sport of choice.

Now I am a San Jose Sharks fan since they were formed I 1991 and drafted Pat Faloon to be the first star of the team. And I’ve cheered for Irbe, Sellane, Ricci, Damphoose and now Marleau, Nabakov and Thornton. I am by no means as crazy as some of my Shark fan friends, like the great comics Kurtis Matthews and Karen Smyth, but I do want them to win the cup.

When it comes to hockey, I am like Samuel L. Jackson’s character in Pulp Fiction was to hamburgers. He didn’t have them that often but he does love a good burger.

And I do love a good hockey game.

So today the Stanley Cup Finals begin. My dream match up of a Sharks/Bruins final didn’t come true… and we are stuck with the Blackhawks and the Flyers.

Who should I root for? I have no emotion or loyalty to either team nor really to either city. I like Chicago and I like Philadelphia. I know a lot of people from both cities and I have performed in both cities.

Now I could cop out and say “I just want a 7 game series and each game to go into overtime.” Which is true… I do want that. But what if Game 7 goes into OT? By definition I would have my wish and would want one team to win.

I need to figure this out and I need to do so before the puck drops. And as usual, I will figure it out by writing lists.

5 Reasons to Root for the Blackhawks

1. They are an Original Six team and having the more traditional teams win is good for the game. Plus they get to show black and white clips of old Blackhawk teams and dust off Tony Esposito and Stan Mikita

2. The Blackhawks have the current longest Stanley Cup drought at 49 years. Their fans have suffered enough.

3. They've got a bunch of young stars like Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook who are all solid. Good young players are good for the league.

4. Neither the Cubs nor the White Sox look like they are going to win anything this year... and Chicago needs a nice title to start the decade off right.

5. The Blackhawks have been the forgotten team in Chicago. Even Cameron Frye didn't wear a Blackhawks jersey in Ferris Beuller's Day Off. It would be cool to see them as the #1 team in the Second City.

5 Reasons to root against the Blackhawks

1. Enough with the Original Six snobbery. I root for an expansion team that plays in California. All the teams get their players from the same pool of Fins, Russians, Czechs, Canadians and dudes from New England and Minnesota.

2. If the Blackhawks win, man it will make the Cubs 102 year drought even lonelier. Then the next longest title drought would be the Super Bowl Shuffle Bears... which wasn't THAT long ago! Cubs fans have gone through enough.

3. Young whipper snappers win the Cup while veterans like Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau have to twiddle their thumbs and wait for another year? Sick.

4. Yeah, Chicago fans will be happy... for about an hour. Don't you think most Chicago fans would trade a Blackhawks Stanley Cup for 2 Bears regular season wins against Brett Favre?

5. Is it Black Hawks or Blackhawks? Make up your mind!

5 Reasons to root for the Flyers

1. They are the underdog! A #7 seed makes it all the way to the Finals? Who can't love a Cinderella story?

2. After blowing the 3-0 lead to the Flyers, it might sit better with my Bruin fan friends to see the Flyers win the Cup. That way they can say "Hey, we lost to a team of destiny!"

3. It's good to see Philadelphia become a city of titles after so many years of futility.

4. Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was a career minor league who only played a handful of games in the NHL. He took over the team mid season and got them to the Cup Final. A lifelong hockey man like that deserves his name on the Cup!

5. Veteran Ian Laperriere is a 16 year veteran making his first Stanley Cup Finals appearance. He too has earned it.

5 Reasons to root against the Flyers

1. Yeah, they are the Cinderella Story, but the Canadiens did most of the heavy lifting for them! It was the Habs, not the Flyers, who knocked off mighty Washington and Pittsburgh.

2. I know a lot of Bruins fans and I have a feeling they don't want to hear Flyer taunts all off season backed up with knowing those fans got a Cup winner out of it.

3. A Flyers win will basically confirm the regular season is totally meaningless... and the NHL doesn't need more reasons to lose viewers.

4. Did the Flyers push the Phantoms out of town? Sure looks like it to me!

5. Matthew Clemmens, the Philles fan who threw up on that girl, is probably a Flyers fan. He doesn't deserve happiness.

It's a tough call... but the tipping factor is personal loyalty.

George Roy, the director of Curse of the Bambino among others, recently made the wonderful documentary Broad Street Bullies about the 1974 and 1975 Philadelphia Flyers.

A Flyers Cup Title would undoubtedly peak interest in the film and make it a stocking stuffer this Christmas season.

So... I am officially going to be rooting for The Philadelphia Flyers in that Game 7 Overtime.

Sorry Bruins fans.

Pittsburgh beats Detroit... again

The Pirates are playing against the Tigers just as the Penguins beat the Red Wings.

I wonder when the last time the cities facing off for the Stanley Cup also had both teams playing each other in the Major Leagues.

I would look this up, but it is 12:30 AM and these are the kind of idle thoughts that when combined with an internet connection could keep me awake for another 3 hours.

If you know the answer, post it on my comment section.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to go to bed.
In less than 6 hours, my sons will come running into my bedroom to wake me up and they won't care about Stanley Cup Finals match ups.
