We interrupt our Red Sox sorrow to crap on Colby Rasmus

As the Cardinals celebrated their improbable run to the National League Wild Card, I saw all the players dumping beer on each other and hugging.

Who wasn't there?
Colby Rasmus.

Remember him? The guy who bitched and moaned his way out of St. Louis.
The guy I crapped on last year for complaining about playing time to LaRussa.
The guy who suddenly had a bunch of defenders chewing me out, talking as if he was an elite player (????)

The Cardinals sent him packing to Toronto, where he got hurt and was lousy when he played.
(A .173 average, .201 on base, .517 OPS and 37 OPS+ stinks no matter how few games you play.)

The Cardinals were 55-48 on July 26th... his last day as a Cardinal.
They went 35-24 without him.

Now of course they were in FIRST PLACE on July 26th, so I guess his defenders could say they fell out of first without him.

But I can't help but wonder if the Cardinals won partially because the guys in the clubhouse were the ones who were on the same page.

Maybe if Colby Rasmus didn't act like a 23 year old who thought he invented the game, he'd be going to the post season too.

Ah well.
He will be good NEXT year... (not 2012. I mean the perpetual NEXT year for prospects who never make it.)

Jonathan Papelbon will owe Daniel Bard a few million dollars

Jonathan Papelbon's contract is up after this year. And after his disastrous 2009 playoff performance and a subpar year last season, the Red Sox seemed ready to bid adieu to Pap, take the two draft picks and move on.

The reason they could afford to do that? The great Daniel Bard, of course! Bard was a kick butt prospect who seemed all but ready to assume the closer role when Papelbon brought his Irish dig elsewhere for big money and an inevitable breakdown (which makes him a prime candidate for the Mets, Cubs or Orioles.)

Have you seen how awful he has been lately?
He's lost 3 games already... THIS MONTH! I don't know what his ERA for September but going into today it was over 17. And after coughing up the game today (which would have given the Red Sox a little breathing room when the Rays show up tomorrow.

Heck, it was a game where Lackey actually settled down and wasn't HORRIBLE.

And Bard blew it.

So when Papelbon goes into negotiations this November, the opening sentence should be "So... you want Bard closing games?"

And then toss a few million bucks to Bard. Papelbon will get the big deal and he wouldn't have if Bard was even adequate down the stretch.

Admit it, Red Sox fans. You thought today was a loss.

When Wakefield couldn't hold onto second and third inning leads, you thought it was going to be one of those nights. It was going to be like one of those 11-10 losses like the Sox had last week.

And once again, it was going to be a night where Wakefield wasn't going to get a win.

And then... suddenly... it happened.

The Red Sox just started scoring and kept scoring. And they scored so much that even Toronto's 6 runs couldn't make a dent in the lead.

200 wins for Wakefield.
And if he somehow gets 7 wins between the rest of this year and next year, he will have the most wins in the history of the Red Sox.

Two sad things about the Red Sox

Tim Wakefield might never win another game in the major leagues. Seriously, if he couldn't get the victory TONIGHT it might just never happen.

199 wins, an All Star appearance and 2 World Series rings (not to mention 3 ALCS wins against the Yankees) isn't shabby. That could be it.

As for this Red Sox, who tonight won as mindboggling an awful game as you can possibly experience, we might have to admit it.

They aren't winning the World Series.
They ARE making the playoffs... and that is cool. And it is great that we live in an age where winning the World Series is a realistic goal.

But that 8th inning was grotesque. And frankly this team is stumbling into October. They COULD pull a 2006 Cardinals and peak at the right time.

Between you and me, I think they will more likely pull a 2007 Angels and fade away.

It's best we lower our expectations.
Be happy that the Red Sox will, barring a monumental collapse, be playing October baseball.
And be happy for any win.

And REALLY hope the Yankees don't win it.

AND JOSH BECKETT IS F***ING HURT!

Perfect! You want your ace pitcher hurt in September.
You want to make sure that your rotation is as weak as possible for the post season!

Call me fatalistic, but if Beckett isn't at full strength then I wouldn't be too happy about a rotation of Lester - Bedard - Lackey - Wakefield.

June 21 - 5-4 loss to San Diego. (Ortiz hits a double play in the 9th to stifle a potential winning rally.)

June 24 - 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh. (The Red Sox strand 7 runners in scoring position.)
June 25 - 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh. (The Red Sox fall out of first as Pedroia's error leads to a Pirates run.)
June 29 - 2-1 loss in Philadelphia. (Vance Worley duels John Lackey and slumping Raul Ibanez drives in both runs.)
July 4 - 9-7 loss to Toronto. (John Lackey's miserable start puts the Sox in too big a hole to climb out of.)

July 25 - 3-1 loss to the Royals. (Scutaro botches a potential game winning squeeze play in the 12th as the Red Sox lose in 14.)

July 28 - 4-3 loss to the Royals. (Crawford's bid for a walk off homer falls just short.)
July 29 - 3-1 loss to the White Sox. (Sox blow a late 1-0 lead and spoil a solid Wakefield start.)

August 1 - 9-6 loss to Cleveland. (Asdrubal Cabrera's second home run was an 8th inning tie breaking shot off of Daniel Bard.)

August 4 - 7-3 loss to Cleveland. (Carlos Santana's homer broke a 3-3 tie.)
August 5 - 3-2 loss to the Yankees. (The Sox leave the bases loaded in the 5th and the Yankees score 3 in the 6th to take the lead.)
August 10 - 5-2 in Minnesota. (The Twins score 3 in the 8th, spoiling Ortiz's game tying homer.)
August 13 - 5-4 loss in Seattle. (Mariners score 5 in the first and the Red Sox come back falls short.)
August 14 - 5-3 loss in Seattle. (The Red Sox comeback falls short as Wakefield loses a complete game).

August 16 - 6-2 loss against Tampa Bay. (The Red Sox pull a triple play but a late rally by the Rays puts the game out of reach.)

August 21 - 9-4 loss at Kansas City. (The Royals' 8 run 6th spoils a 4-1 Sox lead and Wakefield's bid to win 200 games.)
August 30 - 5-2 loss to the Yankees. (Sabathia finally beats the Sox and Cervelli's homer sparks bean balls.)
September 1 - 4-2 loss to the Yankees. (Russell Martin's 2 run double in the 7th put the Yankees on top for good. Rivera struck out Gonzalez with the bases loaded to end the game.)

September 5 - 1-0 loss in Toronto. (Beckett sprains his ankle and Brett Lawrie homered in the 11th to win.)

Down to +5.

I know the Red Sox are going to make the playoffs... I wouldn't mind seeing them WIN a few series and clinch it sooner rather than later.

And oh yeah, have the pitchers healthy.

How are you liking Toronto, Colby Rasmus?

Colby Rasmus bitched and moaned his way out of one of the great organizations in baseball and playing for arguably the most passionate fans in baseball and a chance to make the post season almost every year.

And his defenders, the same ones who called him an elite player on my blog, kept talking about what a mistake it was for the Cardinals to deal this guy.

The thing you have to realize when you talk about Colby Rasmus is that you always need to talk about NEXT year.

He has played 3 seasons. One of the seasons he had a nice year.

But his POTENTIAL means that next year he will be great!

Not THIS year. Rasmus has stunk the first 2 weeks in Toronto. Freed from LaRussa's pressure, he has given the Blue Jays fans a .218 AVG, .246 On Base, .345 slugging, a .591 OPS and a 59 OPS+.

All stats than can be described as the technical term "Shitty."

But NEXT year he will be great!

I'm not talking about 2012. I am talking about NEXT year.

Because when it is 2012, that will be THIS year. And if he has another disappointing season then his defenders will talk about NEXT year... then 2013 will come around and his fans will say "He's still in his 20s... just wait until NEXT year."

I am guessing by 2013, Colby will be on a new team every year, each thinking that NEXT year is THIS year.

And I am guessing that the St. Louis Cardinals will be in a World Series soon, not regretting for a second that they let someone else think of NEXT year.

Dennis Lamp... Mime?

Going through my old baseball cards at my parents home, I stumbled across this one of former White Sox pitcher Dennis Lamp. (He had stops with the Cubs, the A's and Pirates as well as pitching for 2 Division Winners with the Red Sox and having an 11-0 record with the 1985 Division Champion Blue Jays... but here he is a White Sox pitcher.)

It's a 1982 Donruss card and frankly I don't remember ever buying Donruss cards, but here it was in a shoebox.

Dennis Lamp was a good enough player. He pitched for 16 seasons and finished his career with a 3.93 ERA. He saved 15 games for the 1983 Division Champion White Sox.



And he had a kick ass mustache.

There is something odd, however on the back of his card.

Not his stats. Did you check his carrer highlights on the bottom of the card?

Look at the last line...

One of his hobbies is pantomime.



Wait WHAT?



Former White Sox and Red Sox reliever Dennis Lamp was into pantomime?



And what exactly does that mean?



The art of pantomime can refer to a specific form of theater common in Europe. Usually performed in Christmas shows, it involves wildly exaggerated characters, dance and songs.



And lots of the people are dressed in those creepy Harlequin clown costumes that give us all nightmares.

And of course the other possibility is he was a mime.



You know, those guys in the white makeup, dressed like a French stereotype and pretends to be in a wind tunnel or walking invisible dogs.



Either way it is strange.



Either way Dennis Lamp is either dressed in a Harlequin clown suit dancing about... or pretending he is trapped in a box.



Folks, that creeps me out.

I must get to the bottom of this.

NOW we get to see if Colby Rasmus becomes a big star

You got your wish, Colby Rasmus.
You were removed from the baseball purgatory that is St. Louis... from the blockhead manager that is probably going to the Hall of Fame... and a situation where you could make the playoffs for the second time in your three year career.

It must be a relief.
Now he can show the world what Tony LaRussa couldn't see.
And what evidently his supporters already see.
And the people who think the Blue Jays are stealing a star.

I am no LaRussa fan, but I have a hard time seeing how a guy with a decent season under his belt and lots of potential (you know, like Alex Ochoa) could be the focus of so much hand wringing.

I know he's young.
So were every bust in baseball history.

He remains hitless as a Blue Jay. But it is his FUTURE that everyone craves.

The strange thing about the future... sometimes it doesn't unfold the way you want.

And maybe if Rasmus struggles in an empty Rogers Centre for non contending Blue Jays teams, he might pine for the days when he played in a great baseball city along side future Hall of Famers with one of the great managers of all time.

But maybe I am wrong.
And if I am wrong, I will eat crow.

I need more than projections and potential. He needs to actually become a star.

Phew

It was a group effort of lousy pitching tonight in Toronto... and good news for the Red Sox.

Bartolo Colon was really awful in the first. Yeah, 5 of the first inning runs were unearned, but 3 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning is nothing to brag about.

That would be a 40.50 ERA stretched out to a season.
I don't care which stat you use. That sucks.

The Yankees got 6 wins and a decent ERA out of Colon through the All Star break, which is more than anyone could have expected.

As the second half comes along, and his medical records are in, and the fact that he hasn't thrown 100 innings in a season since his Cy Young season 6 years ago is sitting in front of us, and the fact that he missed the entire season last year and at a fat 38, even stem cells might not keep him healthy... the carriage could be turning into a pumpkin.

He's let up 8 earned runs in his last 2 starts (6 1/3 innings pitched combined in those starts.)

Now the Yankees nearly came all the way back but fortunately for the Blue Jays, Red Sox fans and Yankee haters everywhere, the bullpen sucked almost as much as Colon did.

Seriously, if I told you the Yankees scored 7 runs on 14 hits including 2 Andruw Jones homers and saw Jose Bautista leave the game with an injury, you'd assume the Blue Jays got squashed.

Thanks to Ayala, Noesi, Logan and Mitre, it ended a Jays blow out.

A bad game?
Or the Yankees pitching depth starting to get exposed?

Well find out.
