The same day Stephen Strasburg begins his professional life is the same day John Smoltz got cut by the Red Sox.The symmetry is kind of startling.
One can hope for Strasburg's sake he has half the career of John Smoltz, who was as great a big game pitcher as I have ever seen. One of the few people to clinch a post season series as a starter (he threw series clinching complete games twice) and as a closer (where he was ironically the bullpen stopper Bobby Cox needed so desperately in the glory days.)
He's a Hall of Famer and sadly his career might have ended as a member of the Red sox while getting shelled on the mound at Yankee Stadium.
And in a way there is something to be said about that too. If this is indeed the end, then he deserves a long standing ovation and he must know that he is out of gas.
Why did he have to find out during a Red Sox/Yankee series?
Study the Smoltz tapes well Strasburg. If you emulate him, then it will be money well spent!
